Pope Leo XIV Appoints New Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda

The Catholic Church in Uganda has received joyful news following the appointment by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV of Most Rev. Tomasz Grysa, Titular Archbishop of Rubicon, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda.

Archbishop Grysa succeeds Archbishop Luigi Bianco, who faithfully served as the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda from 2019 until his reassignment by the Holy Father in May 2025 as Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia and Apostolic Delegate to Kosovo.

Announcing the appointment, Rev. Fr. Georges Kwami Kouvonou, who has been overseeing the affairs of the Apostolic Nunciature in Uganda since Archbishop Bianco’s transfer, noted that Archbishop Grysa previously served as Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar, Seychelles, and the Republic of Mauritius, while also serving as Apostolic Delegate to Comoros and La Réunion.

Born on October 16, 1970, in Poznań, Poland, Archbishop Grysa was ordained to the Holy Priesthood for the Archdiocese of Poznań on May 25, 1995. He holds a Doctorate in Canon Law and entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on July 1, 2001.

Throughout his distinguished ecclesiastical and diplomatic ministry, Archbishop Grysa has served the Holy See in several Pontifical Representations across the world, including the Russian Federation, India, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York, as well as Israel and the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem and Palestine.

On September 27, 2022, the Holy Father appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar and Apostolic Delegate to Comoros and La Réunion, responsibilities he has carried out with dedication and pastoral commitment until his new appointment to Uganda.

The appointment of Archbishop Tomasz Grysa is being received with gratitude and hope by the Catholic faithful in Uganda, as the local Church prepares to welcome the Holy Father’s representative and strengthen the enduring bonds of communion between the Church in Uganda and the Apostolic See.
