Teachers serving under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana–Luweero, which spans the civic districts of Luweero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola, on Friday, June 12, converged at the Luweero Teachers’ SACCO Gardens in Kasana, Luweero Town Council, to celebrate this year’s Diocesan Teachers’ Day.
The venue, located adjacent to the Pope John Paul II Pastoral Centre, had been carefully prepared in advance and was fully set by early Friday morning as teachers began arriving as early as 7:00 a.m. under a bright, sunny sky.
By 9:00 a.m., the main celebrant, Msgr. Vincent De Paul Mukiibi, the Vicar General of the Diocese, arrived at the venue.
He was warmly received by Rev. Fr. Bonny Muzira, the Diocesan Religious Education Advisor, alongside other clergy and some lay faithful.
Shortly after his arrival, the prelate was led to the celebration grounds as preparations for Holy Mass intensified.
Processions marking the beginning of the liturgy commenced at around 9:30 a.m., setting the tone for a solemn Eucharistic celebration.
At exactly 10:00 a.m., Holy Mass began with Msgr. Mukiibi as the principal celebrant.
The liturgy was animated by students from St. Kizito Secondary School, Katikamu–Kisule, whose choir led the congregation in uplifting sacred music.
Call for unity and renewed vocation
In his homily, Msgr. Mukiibi reminded teachers that their gathering was a moment of renewal and fraternity in their shared vocation.
“We are here to renew our vocation as teachers; we are here to foster unity,” he said.
He urged teachers to embrace collaboration and fraternity across institutions, noting that although they serve in different schools, they are united under one employer—the Diocese.
“We need to move together, sharing experiences, interacting, networking because we are from different schools, but our employer is the same [the Diocese],” he added.
The Vicar General reminded the teachers that while their schools are government-aided, they are fundamentally Catholic-founded institutions under the stewardship of the Diocese.
He expressed concern that some educators had become detached from diocesan programmes.
“Some of you tend to forget by not participating in diocesan programmes,” he said, urging them to remain actively engaged in the life and mission of the Church.
Msgr. Mukiibi also encouraged teachers to use the occasion as a moment of rest and family bonding.
“We spend too much time working from Monday to Friday. Take time to relax. Men here, plan to take your families out for relaxation. Create memories,” he said.
He further emphasized fidelity to the Diocese as their employer, urging teachers to remain committed to diocesan identity and activities.
Health and lifestyle appeal
Turning to matters of wellbeing, Msgr. Mukiibi encouraged teachers to prioritize their health through regular medical checkups and healthy living.
He urged both male and female teachers to be vigilant about lifestyle diseases such as hypertension and diabetes and specifically reminded male teachers to undergo routine medical screenings, including prostate checks.
He also cautioned against excessive alcohol consumption and encouraged balanced diets and regular physical exercise as preventive measures against non-communicable diseases.
Diocesan pilgrimage and development updates
During the same celebration, Rev. Fr. Achilles Kiwanuka, the Diocesan Treasurer General, expressed gratitude to teachers who participated in the 2025 diocesan pilgrimage to Rome.
He announced that the Diocese, under the guidance of the Bishop [Lawrence Mukasa], is organizing another pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Israel, scheduled for February 2027.
“We are appealing to all teachers to go to the Holy Land. The Bishop is asking head teachers to undertake massive mobilization in schools,” Fr. Kiwanuka said.
He encouraged educators to take advantage of the spiritual journey as an opportunity for faith enrichment.
Later in the celebration, teachers who expressed interest in the pilgrimage had their names recorded and contact details collected. They were subsequently blessed by Msgr. Mukiibi.
Fr. Kiwanuka also commended schools for their continued financial support and contributions towards the Diocese, noting their importance in sustaining diocesan programmes and mission activities.
The Diocesan Teachers’ Day ended in a spirit of fellowship, prayer, and renewed commitment to the Church’s mission in education.
Teachers departed with messages centred on unity, moral responsibility, health consciousness, and deeper participation in the life of the Diocese.
