Hundreds of faithful from the Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox traditions gathered this morning [Good Friday] for the Ecumenical Public Way of the Cross in Luweero.
The sacred observance commenced at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Queen of Peace Cathedral, Kasana, where believers converged in prayerful recollection, united in spirit despite denominational distinctions.
The Catholic faithful were shepherded by the Right Reverend Lawrence Mukasa, Bishop of Kasana-Luweero Diocese; the Anglican community was led by the Right Reverend Wilson Kisekka, Bishop of Luweero Diocese, while the Orthodox brethren were under the guidance of Reverend Father Dimitrios Sserugunda.
According to the established program, the faithful embarked on a solemn procession bearing the Holy Cross through Kasana and Luweero towns along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, with the final station designated at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Luweero.
At the commencement of the devotion, the Vicar General of Kasana-Luweero Diocese, Monsignor Vincent De Paul Mukiibi, warmly welcomed the congregation and invoked God’s blessings upon all participants, exhorting them to enter deeply into the mystery of Christ’s suffering with faith and reverence.
Catechist Charles Nsereko provided guidance on the order of prayer and movement, urging all present to observe discipline and adhere to security directives, especially in light of the heavy traffic along the route and the presence of law enforcement personnel.
In his exhortation, Reverend Father Joseph Balikuddembe, Assistant Parish Priest of Kasana Cathedral, appealed for divine justice in the nation, lamenting the prevalence of corruption within the judiciary which, he noted, has led to unjust judgments.
He further decried the increasing encroachment and theft of Church land, calling upon the faithful to intercede fervently for the triumph of truth, justice, and righteousness.
Monsignor Mukiibi, who also serves as the Cathedral Administrator, invited Bishop Mukasa to impart the opening blessing.
In a deeply spiritual invocation, the bishop called upon the Holy Spirit to accompany the faithful throughout the Way of the Cross, praying that hearts may be converted, evil overcome, and all people brought to share in the glory of the Resurrection.
In a symbolic gesture of leadership and humility, Bishop Mukasa was the first to lift the Cross, carrying it to the initial station.
He was followed in turn by Bishop Kisekka and Father Sserugunda, after which members of the laity were given the opportunity to bear the Cross, including the Luweero District LC V Chairman, Erasto Kibirango.
At each station, the faithful paused for meditations and prayers, contemplating the suffering of Christ and its redemptive significance for humanity.
By the time of filing this report at approximately 11:00 a.m., the procession was still underway, marked by deep devotion and orderly participation.
The event, sponsored by MTN Uganda, is being broadcast live via the diocesan YouTube channel, KLD Catholics Online, allowing a wider audience to partake spiritually in this solemn exercise.
